Hi, I’m Ashley Copp; I have been a data freelancer for three and a half years, working for household name clients like Baringa Partners, King.com, Outra, heylo Housing, Akerlof, Riot Games, & BFH University.
During this time, I earned over $300k, took 15 months to travel the world, and worked remotely on three continents. Location and financial independence, working with interesting clients on exciting projects - this is what data freelancing looks like to me.
Recently, I started a revamp of my online presence to attract more international clients, where I spent days crawling the web looking at the online footprint of successful data freelancers for inspiration. I wanted to learn how they attract big-name clients, charge higher day rates, and work fully remotely with clients worldwide without spending hours a day networking, cold emailing, or relying on small contracts from old contacts.
Instead, they leverage their online brand like one giant client magnet:
As I did this, I made a note of standout data freelancers I found on LinkedIn and UpWork and bookmarked professional-looking personal websites. I then broke down each part of their online profile into component pieces to see what was working and what wasn’t.
I wanted to build a repeatable templated process for creating market-beating online profiles for data freelancers - and that’s exactly what I want to share with you today:
- Where should I have an online presence as a data freelancer?
- How do I promote myself without sounding cringe or salesy?
- What do I need to include in my profile?
- What should I avoid saying on my profile?
- How do I convey my value proposition?
- How can I position myself as an expert and charge higher rates?
This course is designed specifically for data freelancers. It’s not a generic ‘how-to’ guide for branding - it’s a deep-dive look at what successful data freelancers are doing to get found online and how you can replicate it.
Looking back, I remember when I first got started with data freelancing.
I updated my work experience on LinkedIn by adding an end date to my time at Accenture.
I published a blog post, letting my ‘network’ know I was seeking contract work.
I then logged off for the day, thinking my work on ‘branding’ was done.
As ridiculous as it sounds, waking up the following day, I couldn’t log on to my laptop quickly enough.
With my updated profile, I was convinced potential clients would fill my inbox with job offers - how wrong I was.
What did I find? - Nothing. Not a single message. Nada.
One day of inbox silence soon turned into three weeks; still, I had heard nothing.
I didn’t understand it; my experience was strong, and thanks to my blog post, I could see people visiting my profile.
Why weren’t they contacting me? What was wrong with my profile?
I felt dejected and lost - a giant crash from my post-quitting high.
I was beginning to question my decision to quit my job to try my hand at freelancing. Was I cut out for this? Was I ready? Finding clients is more challenging than I thought.
Living in London at the time, paying London rent prices whilst trying to maintain a social life, was soon going to eat through my savings - I needed to make a change and quick.
I sat down and started looking at other data freelancers in the space. What were they doing that I wasn’t? How was their profile different to mine?
OK, we both listed our experience and, yes, they had a few more years than me. But was that really it? Was I just not experienced enough?
I knew from my four years in consulting that I was more than good enough to do the job; after all, consulting is just underpaid and overworked glorified freelancing.
It had to be something else.
As I went through profile after profile of successful data freelancers, I began to notice some patterns.
It was in the type of words they used and how often they used them.
It was the parts of their profiles they completed and the bits they didn’t.
It was where they had an account and the platforms they chose to ignore.
And it was the tiny tweaks and optimisations they made to get their profiles found.
The best ones even read like an advert in a magazine - it made me want to work with them.
As a data freelancer, it soon became apparent that I was approaching my online branding all wrong.
I used LinkedIn as a static online CV, and my website wasn’t any better.
My profile was dull and uninspiring, and it didn’t project confidence in my skills and abilities to deliver on projects for clients.
After all, if my public profile reflected the time, effort and care I put into my work, why would a client want to work with me?
After looking at my profile through this lens, even I wouldn’t hire me.
It was a sobering moment that thankfully inspired me into action.
Fired up and motivated, I broke down every profile I found into its component pieces; I turned the text into formulas, created a complete checklist for profile optimisation and got to work.
My first rewrite was embarrassing; it sounded cliche and didn’t reflect my values. Undeterred, I continued - I saw how effective this exercise had been for others, and I wanted to share that success.
Two days and eight coffees later, my revamped profile v2.0 was ready to share with the world.
As I published my page and logged off for the weekend, I was anxious - was this all it takes for clients to start finding me? Or, once again, have I missed the mark?
Monday morning comes around; I check my inbox and find nothing.
Well, it has been the weekend, I thought; let’s give it a few days and see.
Sure enough, later the next day, the first message came through - a small Tableau role - it was a start!
Three days later, I got another email, and two days after that, another - one I wasn’t suitable for, but the other I sure was! This was great. From crickets to three messages in a week - not bad!
The best part? It didn’t stop there.
Week after week, I received information about potential roles, most of which I had to turn down as I was fully booked for months.
The number of messages I was receiving was a testament to the power of a solid online presence.
A solid online presence that I have now been leveraging for years.
Fast forward three and a half years, and I again found myself staring down the barrel of an online brand revamp to make myself more attractive to international clients.
This time, however, I knew where to start.
I knew I had to see what was working for data freelancers today.
To do this, I started the same exercise again.
I spent days reviewing profiles of data freelancers, making notes of what they optimised, the words they used, what they included and what they didn’t so that I could mimic and replicate their success.
I knew how valuable this exercise had been for me in the past in enhancing my freelancing business and lifestyle. How the tweaks I made to my profile ultimately led to me winning more work and starting off the journey that saw me earn over $300k in three years whilst taking out 15 months to travel.
This time, however, I did something slightly different.
This time, I recorded it.
I recorded it so I could share it with you.
I recorded it because I knew how beneficial this was for me and how valuable it would be for you.
I packaged these recordings into a course that shows how successful data freelancers brand themselves online.
I included templates and exercises that you can complete to help you build a standout online profile in hours, not weeks.
A profile that attracts clients to you and enables you to charge a higher day rate and work remotely, travel, and spend more time with your family and friends.
Do you know the best thing about optimising your online brand?
It requires little work, but the potential benefits are enormous.
You don’t need to spend months re-skilling.
You don’t need more experience - you’ve already done the hard work.
Your online brand is about presenting the hard work you have already done in an engaging and professional way so that it’s easy for potential clients to find and connect with you.
This course shows you how to do just that.

Q&As:
How is this course different from other online branding courses?
This course is a deep-dive look at what’s working for data freelancers in online branding: no generic examples or gimmicks designed for the masses. We go through profile after profile of successful data freelancers so you can understand the type of language they use, the examples they give, where you should have a presence, and see for yourself what it takes to stand out in the data space online.
Is this course suitable for those with limited branding or marketing experience?
Yes. We designed this course to be accessible and actionable by data freelancers with all levels of marketing and branding experience. With detailed examples and easy-to-use templates, I guarantee that you’ll be able to put into practice what you have learned, in hours, not days, to create a profile that helps you stand out from other data freelancers and get hired.
What kind of ROI can I expect from this course?
This course delivers two types of ROI; financial & personal. Financially speaking, having an improved online brand allows you to win more work and charge a higher rate for that work. Even a 5% uplift on a standard day rate of $800 would see more than a 40X return on investment in the first year. On a personal level, an improved online presence attracts more clients; more clients means more choices and better terms. Better terms allow you to work remotely, flexibly, travel, and spend more time with friends and family or on passions and hobbies - now that’s an ROI that’s difficult to quantify.
The Online Branding Blueprint for Data Freelancers is for you if:
- You recognise the importance of having an optimised online profile as a data freelancer
- You want to sound authentic and genuine when selling your data services online
- You want to attract more clients, win more work, increase your day rate, and set the terms of your engagement (hello remote work, hello more time with your family)
If you’re ready, I can show you how the top data freelancers brand themselves online, winning high-paying contracts - time after time.

As a data freelancer, having a strong online brand can be the difference between charging $400 a day for your time and $800 - it truly can be life-changing.
Let’s work through two scenarios together:
Scenario A: You have a sparsely populated LinkedIn profile that acts as a static online CV. You spend hours messaging recruiters about potential roles, and one finally agrees to speak to you. On the call, you have to explain your entire backstory; why you think you would be suitable for the role, and feign an interest in the client and the type of work you’ll potentially be doing for the next six months. You know there’s probably lots of interest in this role, and you haven’t had much work recently, so you offer a low day rate of $400 and accept the 2-hour commute three times a week - fingers crossed this lowball offer is enough to get hired - you don’t have many other options.
Scenario B: You take ‘The Online Branding Blueprint for Data Freelancers’ course and learn how to build a standout data freelancing profile that helps you get found online. In less than a day, you have a fully optimised profile that works like a giant client magnet. Your profile clearly explains who you are, who you help, and the value you add. Each week you have multiple opportunities landing in your inbox, practically begging you to help them. You carefully evaluate each opportunity, ensuring the work interests you and fits your goals and ambitions. You get on the call. You don’t need to say much. The client already knows everything they need to know about you; their mind is made up - they want you. After they finish talking, you say, “OK, I’m interested; my rate is $800 a day, I only work on fully remote contracts, and I don’t work Friday afternoons”. The call goes silent. You hear a pen scribbling on a paper pad, and then you hear, “That’s great; when can you start?”.
This example is the difference between a robust online presence as a data freelancer and the absence of one.
When a potential client discovers your online profile and views your specialised services, it instantly establishes you as an authority in their eyes. This shift in perception alters the power dynamic of the relationship, giving you the upper hand in negotiations regarding rates and terms. Having this upper hand is the position you want to be in; this is the position you deserve to be in; this is the position you can be in.
